tsumugi stripe
Fine indigo and slate stripes drift across a textured ground, their rhythm shaped by the subtle uneven dye of the linen warp. The design is based on a 19th-century tsumugi textile once used for an informal men’s han-juban (half kimono). In its original form, the cloth was woven from handspun silk—valued for the irregular slubs that revealed the touch of the maker.
Here, that understated refinement is reinterpreted through a blend of cotton, jute, and linen. Within the dobby weave, the weaver alternates jute and cotton yarns at measured intervals, creating a quiet play of texture and depth. The unevenly dyed warp lends the fabric its antique patina, while the softened finish gives it the ease of something long-cherished.
Tsumugi Stripe reflects the Japanese reverence for modest beauty and quiet mastery—a fabric that speaks through its surface, serene and deeply human.
