carmine lurik
A play of rhythm and restraint: narrow ivory and black stripes rising through a field of deep red. The design draws on lurik, the striped cloth long woven in Central Java for ceremonial dress—jarik and ikat kepala worn in the courts of Yogyakarta and Solo. Traditionally, lurik was thought to steady the spirit; its measured lines an emblem of discipline and protection.
In this contemporary version, the pattern is woven entirely from linen. The warp yarns are unevenly dyed, creating subtle variations of red that recall the hand-dyed irregularities of the original lurik cloths. After weaving, the fabric is washed to a supple softness, the color settling into a quiet shimmer.
The result is both elemental and refined—a meditation on balance, courage, and the beauty of imperfection.
